2017 Classes



February 1, 2017. Classes have begun to fill. 3 spots remain for narrow tang knife in April, Tanto class in May, and Understanding the Ites in October.



IMPORTANT NOTES

1) Each class is limited to four students.  

2) A down payment of $200 is required to hold a place in a class.

3) There is a welcome dinner provided on Sunday evening prior to the Monday start   date.

4) On site accommodations are not offered.  Please scroll down to the bottom of this page for a list of housing options in the area.

April 24 - 28, 2017 - Narrow Tang Knife Class

Basic Knife Making Class

Beginner to intermediate skill level.

Tuition $700 per student for the week.  Materials Fee $50.


Working closely with Howard each student will forge, heat treat, grind and polish a stick tang/hidden tang knife and begin handle construction.  Our goal is for each student to walk out with a finished knife.


Includes five days of instruction 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.  Welcome dinner on Sunday April 23rd.


May 29 - June 2, 2017 - Tanto Class

Beginner to intermediate skill level.

Tuition $750 per student.  Materials Fee $50.


Working closely with Howard each student will forge, anneal, grind a Japanese style tanto then clay heat treat the blade to produce sori and hamon.  Learn the metallurgical science and value of differential heat treatment.


Includes five days of instruction 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.  Welcome dinner on Sunday May 28.



Sept. 11 - 15, 2017 - Full Tang Kitchen Knife Class

Beginner to intermediate skill level. 

Tuition $700 per student for the week,  $50 Materials fee.


Working closely with Howard each student will forge, heat treat, grind and polish a full tang knife and begin handle construction.  Focus will be on making a knife for kitchen use. Our goal is for each student to walk out with a finished knife.


Includes five days of instruction 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.  Welcome dinner on Sunday Sept. 10.



Oct. 9 - 13, 2017 - Understanding the “Ites”

Metallurgy for Blacksmiths. 

Tuition $1500 per student for the week.  Plus $100 materials fee.

Intermediate skill level.


For bladesmiths who want to up level the performance and durability of the knives they produce.  This class dispels the myths and provides real answers for the questions of what’s happening with my knives?


In this five day class we will be exploring metallurgy as it applies to bladesmithing. Using John Verhoeven’s book “Steel Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist” the students will conduct hands on experiments to make it real, not just words and abstract concepts.


Each student will leave with an understanding of what the “ites” are and how to use that knowledge to make better knives. 


Ferrite, Austenite, Bainite, Cemetite, Martensite.


As a student you will be forging, annealing, grinding and using a variety of hardening techniques as we explore these concepts.


Includes five days of instruction Monday to Friday.  Welcome dinner on Sunday Oct. 8.
